Extending Projector Lamp Life

You purchase a projector for a purpose. At home you would likely use it for entertainment. At work, it could be for making presentations. That's why you should make sure that the projector and especially the projector lamp stays in good shape always. You should do your best to extend the life of the projector lamp.

The Causes of Projector Lamp Damage

To extend the life of your projector lamp, it is important that you know what could damage it. Avoiding the possible causes would definitely extend the life of the projector lamp. For instance, excessive heat could damage the projector lamp and cause burnout so this should be avoided. Excessive cold is not good for it either. Aside from that excessive dust, excessive moisture and excessive movement should also be avoided.

Avoid Excessive Heat in Your Projector Lamp

Starting from the configuration of your home theater or the positioning of your projector, avoiding overheat should be taken into consideration. You should put enough space between the projector's exhaust and intake fans, and the walls or any enclosed compartments. The space requirement is typically 2 feet in between but just to be sure, you should consult your projector's manual. You will be protecting your projector lamp better this way.

After using the projector, you should let the projector lamp cool down first before you pull the plug out of the electric outlet. While the plug is in the fan will keep on running for a bit so the projector lamp will be able to cool down properly.

There should not be any obstruction in the vents of the projectors. With proper ventilation, the temperature of the projector lamp would be managed well. Overheat would be avoided so the life of the projector lamp would be extended.

Avoid Excessive Dust and Other Specs of Dirt

First and foremost, handling the projector lamp itself is very important. You should not hold it with bare hands. You can either use gloves or non-abrasive cloth when handling the projector lamp so as not to leave oil or dirt on it. This is important since oil could burn on the lamp and cause the life of the projector lamp to be shortened.

Dirty projector filters would prevent proper heat ventilation. This again could cause overheat in the projector lamp. That is why filters should be clean every 3 to 6 months or even more often if the projector is used more often.

Other Projector Lamp Care and Maintenance

“Low Lamp” and “Economy Mode” options are there for a reason. Such modes require less brightness from the projector lamp so it extends the life of the lamps as well.

The projector should not be moved while the projector is still hot. The projector lamp filament is very fragile while it is still at this state. A slight shock or vibration could cause it to break. So to prevent this occurrence and to lengthen the life of the projector lamp, it is best that it stays put until it has cooled down completely.
