How expensive are projector lamps? |
If you have a projector you already know that projector lamps are not the least expensive thing out there to buy. But you may be wondering why the cost is so darn much. That's what we are going to look at today.
One of the biggest reasons for the price of the projector lamps is because this is one of the best places for the manufacturer to make a lot of money. Selling the projector lamps for 100 pounds all the way up to 300 pounds, but with a cost of 100 pounds to make this is a tremendous amount. This is how some of those manufacturers out there will offer that free replacement projector lamp. This gives the manufacturer a great way to not give up a lot of money, but they will look like a huge savings to the person who thinks the lamp would cost them 300 pounds. An interesting bit of trivia is that back in 1994, these projector lamps were running at 3 pounds to 8 pounds, and these projector lamps lasted a total of 40 hours. What a difference in these years.
However, it seems that the manufacturer of these projector lamps also keep the production down, meaning they keep less projector lamps on the shelves. This means they will be harder to find when you go to look for them. In the world there are over 500 types of projectors in the marketplace. Sales for projectors run around 5 to 6 million each year.
These projectors don't all use the same projector lamp either; they will range from 150 to 300 watt projector lamps. A lot of these lamps come with the hours that they are good for and how much the normal person uses these projectors. This means a bunch of the time these projector lamps will not stop working for around 2 to 3 years. This shows why the manufacturers don't feel the need to make many projector lamps, otherwise there would be a lot on the shelf for few to use.
But when it comes time for you to buy a replacement projector lamp you will find that you will have to buy the manufacturers replacement. No one has made any third party replacements yet. This is another reason why the prices continue to stay up so high. Until someone steps up and starts going to bat and making these projector lamps, offering it separately from the manufacturer and offering it to the public, this will continue.
Some people will think why should they replace a projector lamp when it's been two or three years since they got the projector? Which when you think about it, the technology advances so quickly that it would seem like a great idea just to replace the projector all together. Something that you bought three years ago could now cost you around 300 pounds, and when you bought it originally it could have cost you 750 pounds. So that's a pretty big savings, and with the cost of a replacement projector lamp possibly being more than what a new projector will cost, it's easy to see why some people will choose this option instead of buying a replacement projector lamp.
