Some facts about the Projector lamps

There are two types of projector lamps: the Halogen bulb and the metal halide lamp. Firstly, let us have a look at the differences between the projector lamps:Halogen Bulb: The halogen bulbs find great usage in the comparatively cheaper projectors and their average life is somewhere around 40 to 70 hours. The images transmitted by them have a yellowish tinge to them when projected on the screen and the picture clarity is not that great. The images transmitted by the halogen bulbs are always bright. They cost somewhere in the range of $70 to $100.

Metal halide projector lamps: These lamps are used in the more expensive projectors and their cost lies in the range of $300 to $500. The average life of the metal halide projector lamps is usually 950 hours to 2000 hours and the image transmitted by these lamps is completely white when projected on the screen. The images lose brightness over the time in the sense that if the life of the lamp has come to half, then the brightness will also have reduced to half.

There are various factors that if the user takes care of, he can increase the life of the projector lamp. Some of those factors are:The fan should always be kept running after switching off the power button so that the filament gets time to cool off properly.

There should be proper circulation of air so that the projector lamp does not get over heated and therefore damaged.

The lamp should always be kept clean and free from dust so that its performance is not reduced because of these factors.

The life of the projector lamp also depends on the kind of surroundings it is kept in and the number of hours the projector is used on a daily basis. Ideally, the projector can be used for three to five hours every day and in a clean environment so that the projector lamp does not fail due to excess heat.

The projector lamps can be either UHP or the Ultra High performance ones, UHE or Ultra High Efficiency or the ones with metal halide. The most common variety among all these three types is the UHE projector lamp and this classification is based on their image quality and brightness of the picture.

One of the popular types of projectors is the DLP or the Digital Light Processing projector and the lamp of this projector consists of a reflector in the mercury-vapor arc division, various types of electrical connections and a quartz arc tube. Slowly, slowly as the arc tube gets older, the light emission also decreases, and then finally it needs to be replaced with a new arc tube.

Some of the popular brands that manufacture projector lamps are JVC, AVIO, Canon, 3M, Sanyo, Samsung, NEC and Yamaha etc. Each brand claims to have something special about its products, but it is up to the customer to understand the differences between them and their cost and then buy the most suitable projector lamps for their projector.
